I have suffered from all kinds of headaches — sinus, pressure, cluster, and migraine — throughout my life. I have even been hospitalized for a severe migraine that lasted for six weeks. Unfortunately, I am all too familiar with the pain and agony that headaches can cause and their ability to incapacitate us, wreaking absolute havoc on our lives.
Initially, I sought treatment from physicians and neurologists, who prescribed various prescription medications. Although the pills often eased the pain, they were accompanied by numerous side effects, including irregular heart rate, nausea, dizziness, and extreme drowsiness. I felt like I was just trading one type of pain for another. In my next attempt to conquer the headaches, I tried over-the-counter medications, but they were only occasionally able to ameliorate the anguish in my head.
My quest took a final turn when I explored natural remedies after learning that peppermint oil could relieve headaches. Imagine my surprise — and happiness — when it worked! Not only did my pain dissipate within five minutes, the peppermint felt tingly and cool on my skin. It was simultaneously soothing and refreshing, which was obviously a most welcome respite to my misery.
If you would like to try peppermint oil to rid yourself of that pesky headache, check out your local health food store or specialized grocery store like Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s. There are several methods you can choose to use the oil, including:
· dabbing a tiny amount (smaller than pea-sized) onto your finger and applying it directly to your temples, rubbing it in completely;
· filling a small bowl with ice water and adding 5 to 7 drops of peppermint oil and:
o dipping a washcloth into the bowl, wringing it out, and applying the compress to your forehead for 10 to 15 minutes, OR
o dipping your finger into the mixture and applying it directly to your temples, rubbing it in completely.
Regardless of the method you choose, always remember to avoid contact with your eyes and wash your hands well!
